Cholla Trail
The summit of Camelback Mountain is at 2,704 feet above sea level. Elevation gain from the two summit trails is approximately 1,200 feet. This particular trail is not difficult from a technical perspective. However, climbing this trail during the summer in Phoenix can be quite a challenge -- bring plenty of water. Even for the begining hiker, this trail is well marked and easy to navigate.
Distance: 1.26 mile.
The Cholla Trail hike can be a little deceptive as there is a good altitude gain at the begining with spectacular views to the south. As you progress to about 1/3 of the way you will cross over to the north face of the mountain.
Duration: For most day hikers, a round trip my take up to 2 hours. Often times you will see the die hard hikers who run up and down under 45 minutes round trip.. Some make it to the top under 27 minutes.
Equipment: Good hiking shoes, hat, sun glasses and lots of water. We had our share of helping inexperienced hikers who did not bring enough H2O, under estimated the mountain and the Arizona heat; resulting in sprained ankles, heat stroke and more.
